PRODUCT CARE FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR COVERS
Looking after your car cover properly keeps it doing its job for years instead of months. Indoor and outdoor covers need different treatment, so here's how to clean each one without damaging the fabric or any printed logos.
How to Wash Indoor Car Covers
Indoor covers are machine washable, which makes them easy to keep clean.
Wash on a cold or warm cycle at 30 degrees with a mild detergent. Avoid harsh powders or anything with bleach, since these can break down the fabric's soft inner lining over time. Once it's washed, hang it out to line dry.
Do not tumble dry. The heat can shrink the fabric and damage the breathable backing that protects your paintwork.
One more thing: wash the cover on its own. Washing it with other items, especially anything coloured, risks colour transfer onto the cover. A single-item wash takes a few extra minutes but saves you from staining.
Looking After a Printed Logo
If your cover has a printed logo, you can still wash it at 30 degrees. No special detergent needed.
The one precaution worth taking: when you load the cover into the machine, fold it so the logo sits in the middle of the bundle. This keeps the print from rubbing against the drum walls during the spin cycle, which is what causes logos to crack or fade early.
Noticed creases in the logo after unfolding it from the carry bag? That's normal and easy to fix. Lay a clean towel over the logo, then run a warm iron over the top of the towel two or three times. The towel protects the print from direct heat, and the creases lift right out. Never iron the logo directly.
How to Clean Custom Made Outdoor Covers
Outdoor covers are built tougher to handle weather, UV, and road grime, but that also means they can't go in the washing machine. The heavy-duty fabric and waterproof coating don't react well to a wash cycle.
Instead, clean them in place. Aim for at least once a year, more often if you're parked under trees, near salt air, or anywhere it picks up grime quickly.
To clean an outdoor cover:
- Leave the cover on the car.
- Rinse it down with a garden hose to clear loose dirt and dust.
- Sponge it over with a mild car shampoo solution. Skip household detergents, since they can strip the waterproof coating.
- Rinse thoroughly with the hose again to remove all soap.
- Leave it to line dry naturally.
Do not tumble dry outdoor covers. Heat ruins the waterproof layer that keeps your car protected.
A Few Quick Tips
- Always make sure a cover is fully dry before folding and storing it. Damp fabric in a carry bag can develop mildew and a musty smell.
- Store covers somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight when they're not in use.
- Check the cover for trapped grit before putting it back on the car. Small stones or dirt caught underneath can scratch your paint.
DO NOT TUMBLE DRY
